Be careful! Fake solar eclipse glasses being sold online

Later this month, New Hampshire will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, and wearing proper safety glasses is important. Fake glasses being sold online, however, could be putting people at risk.

Popular websites, such as Amazon, have uncertified glasses listed for sale. Those glasses do not have the needed solar filter to prevent eye damage during a solar eclipse.

Wearing knock-offs presents a danger that one Massachusetts doctor said could be irreversible.

“There can actually be a toxic chemical reaction in the back of the eye,” Dr. Glenda Savitz said. “It releases free radicals and that can end up with irreversible damage.”

Savitz said you should only wear glasses that are ISO certified, which is labeled on the side of the certified glasses.
